Why Office Pods Go Unused
Acoustics
Why pods go unused.
The failure mode nobody warns you about, and it has almost nothing to do with how quiet the booth is.

Office pods rarely fail on acoustics. They stop being used for three other reasons: weak ventilation that makes the booth uncomfortable within twenty minutes, poor placement where people will not cross the floor to reach it, and having only one, so people find it occupied twice and give up. All three are decided before the pod is ordered.
1 · Ventilation
The specification that decides usageAn acoustic booth is a sealed box. Sealing is what stops sound leaving, and it is also what stops air entering. Without powered air exchange, one person makes a small booth uncomfortable within about twenty minutes.
That discomfort is what ends the habit. Someone has a stuffy experience, then another, and stops using it. The booth is still acoustically excellent and now permanently empty.
Ask for airflow in cubic metres per hour and the air change interval — under four minutes keeps a booth usable for long sessions. Then ask the question almost nobody asks: does it ventilate when the booth is empty? A pod that only runs while occupied is stale for the first few minutes of every session, which is exactly when someone forms their opinion of it. Ours cycles for five minutes every half hour of vacancy for that reason.

Airflow, stated in numbers
70 m³/h in a one-person booth up to 327 in a six-person pod, air fully changed every 1.6 to 2.4 minutes, and it keeps running when nobody is inside.

A door that seals
The gasket is what maintains the acoustic performance over years of use. A door opened fifteen times a day for five years is 27,000 cycles, and this is where cheap booths degrade first.
2 · Placement
People will not cross an officeThe instinct is to put a booth in the quiet corner where there is spare floor. That is precisely backwards.
Put it where the noise already is. Within a few metres of the desks generating the calls, usually the sales or client-facing side. If someone has to walk past twenty desks to reach it, they will take the call where they are sitting.
Two secondary things: a pair in one location reads as a facility while two scattered read as two occupied booths, and a glazed door pointed straight at a bank of desks gets used less because people feel watched. Angle it, or specify frosted or switchable glazing.
3 · Only having one
The two-strike rulePeople stop trying after finding a booth occupied twice in a row. Not five times, not ten. Twice.
After that they revert to their desk and the behaviour the pod was bought to change quietly returns. One booth per fifteen people works for normal call volumes; one per eight to ten for sales, recruitment and anything client-facing.
If the budget covers two smaller booths or one larger one, take the two. It is the advice we give most often and it costs us margin every time we give it.
What actually gets used

| Placement | Beside the noisy desks | In the quiet corner with spare floor |
| Quantity | Two or more | One |
| Sightlines | Angled, or frosted glass | Glazed door facing a desk bank |
| Size | Matched to session length | Smallest model, used for full days |
What customers say
Named, with permission★★★★★
“We added a FocusPod Solo because private phone calls were becoming difficult in our open-plan office. It gets used constantly for client calls, Zoom meetings and focused work. It looks professional, takes up very little space and has freed up our meeting rooms for larger groups.”

★★★★★
“We originally purchased one FocusPod Solo to see how much use it would get. Within the first week, staff were booking it throughout the day. It has given everyone a quiet place to take calls without interrupting the rest of the office.”
Daniel Brooks
Westbridge Property Group
★★★★★
“The Solo has been a great addition to our studio. We have a collaborative workspace, which is excellent most of the time, but it can be difficult when someone needs privacy or complete concentration. The pod solves that problem without taking over the room.”

★★★★★
“We mainly use the Duo for candidate interviews and private staff discussions. It is comfortable for two people and creates a much more professional environment than trying to hold interviews at an open desk. It has quickly become one of our most useful office spaces.”

★★★★★
“The FocusPod Duo is perfect for one-on-one meetings, performance reviews and confidential conversations. It gives us privacy without requiring a full-size meeting room, and it fits neatly into the office without making the space feel crowded.”

Common questions
Why don't people use our office pod?
Usually one of three things: ventilation that makes it uncomfortable after twenty minutes, placement too far from where the noise actually is, or there being only one so people find it occupied and give up. Acoustics are rarely the problem.
Do office pods get stuffy?
A poorly ventilated one does, within about twenty minutes, and it is the most common reason a booth stops being used. Ours is published: 70 to 327 m³/h depending on model, air changed every 1.6 to 2.4 minutes, and it keeps running for five minutes every half hour when the booth is empty.
Where should we put our office pod?
Within a few metres of the desks generating the calls, not in the quiet corner with spare floor space. People will not cross an office to take a call. Avoid pointing a glazed door directly at a bank of desks.
Is one office pod enough?
Usually not. People stop trying after finding a booth occupied twice in a row, so a single pod on a busy floor often ends up unused. One per fifteen people is a working ratio, or one per eight to ten for client-facing teams.
Does ventilation run when the pod is empty?
On a FocusPod, yes — a five-minute exchange every thirty minutes of vacancy, so the booth is fresh when the next person opens the door. Many pods only ventilate while occupied, which means the first few minutes of every session are stale.
Planning where it goes?
Send us the floor plan with the noisy desks marked. We will tell you where the pod should sit and how many you need before you order.
