The specification differences from a corporate setting are supervision sightlines, durability and procurement process. Any enclosed space in a school raises a duty-of-care question, and it is the right question to ask before anything else.

Specify clear glazing, not frosted. A full-glass door maintains line of sight into the booth from the room, which is what supervision requires. It is also why the frosted and switchable options that suit corporate settings are usually the wrong choice here.

Position them within sight of a staff position — a library desk, a teacher's station, the front of a classroom. The booth should be visible from wherever an adult normally sits.

Occupancy-sensing lighting also helps, since a booth in use is visibly lit from outside.

Libraries and senior study areas. A booth gives a student somewhere genuinely quiet without leaving a supervised space.

What to specify differently

Clear glazing. As above — supervision beats privacy in a school setting.

Ventilation matters more, not less. Students use booths for longer stretches than office workers do and are less likely to say anything when a space is uncomfortable. Ask for m³/h and the air change interval.

Durability. A booth in a school gets more use and rougher handling than one on a corporate floor. Ask what the door mechanism is rated for and where replacement parts are held.

Furniture matched to the age group. A stool suits a fifteen-minute call and does not suit a ninety-minute study session.

Procurement and approvals

No building approval is required. A freestanding pod does not attach to the floor, walls or ceiling and is treated as furniture, so it sits outside the approval process that a built room would require. That is usually the single biggest practical advantage in an education setting, where capital works timelines run in years.

Floor loading is the question a facilities team will ask. Assembled weights run 290 kg to 970 kg — roughly 143 kg/m² for a six-person pod up to about 310 kg/m² for the smallest booth, which concentrates its weight over about one square metre. We supply the figures in writing.

Electrical. One standard 240V 10A outlet, wiring to AS/NZS 3000, no dedicated circuit and no electrician. This matters in a school where any electrical work triggers a process.
